VvS1: Crew Profile

Captain: Andy Grocott

I apprenticed and served on Tall Ships before moving to Yachts eleven years ago. A keen sailor, I grew up rowing and sailing on the lakes and harbours of New Zealand.  I enjoy the adventure, challenges and the responsibilities of commanding a large yacht and have a depth of experience having sailed in many of the worlds yachting destinations.  I joined VvS1 part of the way through the build and gained a thorough knowledge of the vessel during this time.  I look forward to welcoming you on board VvS1 some time in the future.

Engineer: Ben Barker

Hi, my name is Ben and I’m from Cairns, Australia, where I'm lucky to have the rainforest and reef on my door step.  I started my working life as a marine A/C and Refrigeration mechanic before moving onto life at sea as an engineer on prawn trawlers in northern Australia.  After a few years fishing I left my home country to pursue a career in yachting, spending the past 7 years working as an engineer in many countries around the globe.  My passions are spearfishing and hunting which I spend all my spare time chasing good grounds to pursue the big one.  I look forward to meeting you and showing you a great time aboard VvS1 in our beautiful backyard of the Pacific.

Chief Stew: Liv Walford

Kia Ora, I have been in the yachting industry for the past five years. My passion for the ocean began young, growing up around boats, diving, fishing and the outdoors, which in turn lead me to become a diving instructor on the Great Barrier Reef for many years.  Always after exciting new challenges I turned my hand to the yachting world, which has seen me to many countries and some fabulous diving locations.I am currently enjoying my time on VvS1, which has brought me back to my home country New Zealand. I’m looking forward to the year ahead and cruising the beautiful south Pacific.

First Mate: Matt Twiss

Hi, I’m from Mt. Maunganui, New Zealand where I was involved with Surf Lifesaving.

I taught Scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland, Australia, before venturing into Yachting five years ago in the US and Europe.  The opportunity to work in the South Pacific and being closer to home has brought me to VvS1 where I look forward to sharing true experiences in this great region of the world.

2nd Stew: Leigh Ashmead

I’m the newest recruit on VvS1, and it’s the first large yacht I’ve worked on.  I’m originally from Durban, South Africa, but moved to New Zealand nine years ago.  I’ve worked as a Veterinary Nurse and as a personal trainer, before deciding to try out yachting.  I look forward to seeing you aboard VvS1 some time soon.
